How to performance Metal in a Muslim World?

Rami: Its cool for us, I mean we do live in Dubai, United Arab Emirates which is a Muslim country and it’s much modernized where music is freely expressed. The metal scene is very small here, it’s almost non-existent and we try to keep our music going on because we love what we do really. Not many gigs happen in Dubai. We play shows internationally more than locally. There isn’t many clubs or pubs that hold metal shows here. Very few times clubs open their doors for metal gigs and this started just this year when we had our mini-Dubai tour in March/April and I think its a great step! The only event that holds rock/metal music is the annual Desert Rock Festival which brings rock and metal bands every year to Dubai (previously had Motorhead, Megadeth, Testament, Iron Maiden, Machine Head, Sepultura etc.) and we played this festival 3 times to date which is pretty cool.

The presence of Nervecell in Dubai has influenced another bands there?

Barney: I guess so yes, it is fair to say so as we have had a lot of bands tell us that they have been influenced by Nervecell and have always been fans of what we have been doing here in this region. I think we showed a lot of metal bands in the Middle East that its not impossible to take your music seriously and develop a career out of it.
How many Metal bands can you find in the Arab World?

Rami: There are a few good bands in the Arab World / Middle East, and many others are developing.

What are your influences?

Rami: I started listening to traditional heavy metal and thrash metal stuff like Megadeth, Slayer, Sepultura, Pantera, Metallica, Dark Angel etc. and later to extreme metal – death and black metal – Death, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Suffocation, Dissection, Dark Funeral and many others. I’m also a big fan of progressive metal like Symphony X, Adagio, Dream Theater etc.

Barney: Early wave of Death Metal and Thrash Metal– Dismember, Entombed, Carcass, Pestilence, Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, Testament, Pantera, Sepultura etc.
What bands from Central America have you heard mentioned before?

Rami: Well, Sepultura and Angra also from Brazil, Disgorge (Mexico) hmmm that’s all I know now hehe

Barney: Internal Suffering – FUCKIN SICK STUFF!
Do you have a main place in Dubai where Metal fans can join for a gig?

Barney: There are hardly any gigs taking place here so therefore there really is no “hang out” place. Lately there has been a few clubs who hold a “metal night” once in a week, there is no live bands there but just a dj playing metal music – it can get pretty boring sometimes…haha
Tell us about your expectations in the next Desert Rock Festival 2009 with so famous MOTORHEAD, OPETH, ARCH ENEMY, etc?

Barney: Desert Rock is always a good time and we always get to hang out and chat with the bands there welcoming them to our world, so yeah we expect nothing but good times.
What are your plans for the future?

Barney: Probably go out and tour Europe during the rest of 2009 and the U.S in 2010 in support of Preaching Venom.
Do you have any plan to come to America?

Rami: We are taking about it. But for now we are focusing on Europe as we are doing our European festival tour for 2009 and maybe by next year there will be plans for a tour in America and maybe South America too!

These are questions for a rapid response from you;
God= Rami: I believe in one god.

Barney: The Almighty ONE.

Religion= Rami: My religion is Islam.

Barney: Sacred - I am Roman Catholic.

Heavy Metal= Rami: The best fuckin’ music in the world! Its my life haha!

Barney: It’s a lifestyle!

Best Album= Rami: Wow very hard one! Ok, one of my favourite metal albums is Symphony X “The Divine Wings of Tragedy”

Barney: Very Hard One – probably Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” I remember listening to that and wanting to learn to play the guitar.

Preferred Band= Rami: Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Pantera, Death, Slayer, Sepultura (old) and shit load others!

Barney: Old School bands mainly – PANTERA.

Best Nervecell Live Performance= Rami: I had many great performances, but I really enjoyed Metalstock Festival in Australia (2007) to date!

Barney: Hmmm probably Desert Rock 2008! We had a great set and it was the first time we played songs from Preaching Venom before the album came out.

Rock AM Ring / Rock IM Park= Rami: Wow they were great! Our first live performances in Germany and I really didn’t expect the crowd to be as crazy! We would love to play again in the future.

Barney: A really great show for us, it was our first German gig and being the only death metal band on the bill the crowd absolutely our set. We had a blast out there and it was my birthday too so it was special night for me!

America= Rami: Hopefully we will have a full tour in the US in the future.

Barney: A great country and we hope to tour there soon.

Costa Rica= Rami: If we visit America, Costa Rica will be one of the first countries on our list in South America ;)

Barney: A lot of metal heads there, can’t wait to see them all soon.
